The work exists both in relationship with the human body and as an independent stand-alone sculpture. These pieces do not need to reference the body to be understood, but when they are worn, they create a statement. As a sculptural object, Hybrida pieces function in relationship to their spatial placement, allowing the viewer to make his or her own associations and connections.

The premise behind Hybrida group was to cut all three pieces from the same sheet of material, attempting to take a zero-waste approach to the work. My intention was to create three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional simple geometric shapes.  The components in each piece follow a flat pattern that, when folded into three-dimensional forms and arranged in multiples, provide the structure and define the aesthetic of the piece.

The process includes treating three sheets of sintered woven stainless steel wire with a flame patina. The tightly-woven metal textile (made out of almost microscopic wires that is at once porous, flexible, tough, and resilient) is heated under pressure until fused, making a flexible sheet that can be cut without fray. The result is a thin, bendable material, of structural strength, that maintains the inherent characteristics of stainless steel.
